What Is Your Application SOAP?

application soapApplying to a medical residency or nephrology fellowship can be a confusing time, especially with all of the different acronyms and processes that you will need to understand. Your applications to programs are made through ERAS; this is the Electronic Residency Application Service and is part of the Association of American Medical Colleges. This allows you to make applications to almost all available residency and fellowship places throughout the US from just the one place with a common set of documentation.
Once you have made your applications however the selection process uses what is known as the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) or the Match. This is process that has been designed to fairly allocate places based on the preferences of the applicants and the many different programs that are out there. However with some 30,000 places to be filled there are many places that are not initially filled by the Match even though there are over 40,000 applicants.
This is where SOAP (Supplementary Offer and Acceptance Program) comes in. The SOAP process is there to allow unmatched applicants find and then apply to programs that are also not matched or only partially matched.

Documentation Required for Your SOAP Match

There is no documentation that is directly uploaded into SOAP or the NRMP. All applications to programs are made through ERAS and this is where all of your information will reside. However programs will decide your ranking from the information that they take from ERAS. So it is vital that your application documentation in ERAS is complete and done perfectly. The following are your documentary requirements through ERAS which you can start in May:

  • Completed MyERAS application form
  • One page nephrology personal statement; you can upload more than one version and allocate to specific programs.
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Medical school transcripts
  • Authorize the upload of your USMLE results (United States Medical Licensing Examination)
  • Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter (PTAL) for Californian applicants
  • Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates status report for overseas applicants (ECFMG)
  • Letters of Recommendation (LoR); you input the details of your LoR authors and the system will generate a personalized request for you to pass on. This allows them to directly upload your LoR to ERAS.

Normal Match Application

Once you have confirmed the completion of your documentation in ERAS you will be able to start to review programs and apply to them through your MyERAS. The Match is a separate system and must be registered to; this can be done from September (after the end of November you will be charged an additional $50 late fee).
The Match works in the following way:

  • From mid January you are able to input your Rank Order List. This is the preferences you have for the programs that you have applied to so that the system knows which you want most and which least. Each program will also review the applicants that it has received and will rank them also in order.
  • Match Week starts in the middle of March. It lasts from Monday to Thursday and each day the Match will run a series of rounds. At the end of each round you will be notified if you have been matched with any programs. If you have been (and it may be more than one) you must then within 2 hours accept or reject those matches.
  • Thursday Match Week; the Match concludes on Thursday and you will be notified by 12 Noon with your final match.

SOAP Application Example

The purpose of SOAP is to allow unmatched applicants to apply to programs that are unfilled or only partially filled. The following example shows how the process works:

  • Friday before Match Week; you will be informed if you are eligible for SOAP. You don’t have to apply and being eligible does not mean that you will not be Matched. Eligibility is based on being registered for the Match and able to start on the 1st of July. You also do not have to submit a Rank Order List. The following example will run you through the process:
  • Friday prior to Match Week; you are informed if you are eligible for SOAP and provided with links to the NRMP that explain the process.
Monday 11AM; if you are not Matched through the initial NRMP rounds then you will be provided access to a list of unfilled programs.
  • Monday 3PM; you can begin to make applications to programs that have not been matched fully.
  • Wednesday 12PM; A first round of matches through SOAP is made using the same R3 system as used in the main Match. You have 2 hours again to either accept or reject any offer that is made.
  • Wednesday 3PM; The second SOAP round is made.
  • Thursday; SOAP rounds are run at 9AM, 12PM, and 3PM.
  • Thursday 5PM; SOAP concludes and you will be informed if you have been Matched.
